Adjust Your Sails

How often do have a ridiculously great plan, and everything is going really well, when life happens and threatens to derail your progress?  What do you do in this situation?  What should you do?

Well, first of all, there are many many things that happen in life over which we have no control.  Yes, believe it or not, we actually can’t control every single thing![pullquote]I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.  – Jimmy Dean[/pullquote]

Did you have people in your life who were really strict or did you or do you set really high standards for yourself on a regular basis?  Do you just want to give it up when you don’t reach those impossible goals?

Instead of throwing in the towel, it’s better to make adjustments.  What do I mean by “making adjustments”?  I mean, when you get off course, bring yourself back on course as quickly as possible.  I’m sure you’ve heard the analogy of a plane traveling to a certain destination.  A plane does not travel in a straight line on it’s journey; and neither will you.

Progress is made in various spurts; sometimes great and sometimes small.  Nevertheless, progress is made.  It will be a jagged line toward your goal.  You can’t account for everything that will come at you in your fitness journey.  There will be many distractions, challenges, and setbacks.  Don’t worry about it!  Like Jimmy Dean said, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

Adjust your “sails” based on your weekly feedback and the challenges life throws at you.  Use the information you get from living through challenges to rest your course.  Regroup and realize how strong you are to have gotten through setbacks and plateaus and forged on.

You can’t control all your circumstances, you can only adapt, adjust, and overcome!
